What is Karatedo?

The word Karatedo is a combination of three Japanese characters kara (empty), te (hand) and do (way or path). The "way of Karate" is a means of physical, spiritual and moral development based on protracted training.

Karatedo practice is divided into three aspects:

Kihon (basic training) emphasizes stances, breathing, basic blocks, hand techniques and kicks. These are repeated until the movements becomes almost instinctive, obtaining a perfect action. To see beneath the surface features of the technique and grasp the core common is to comprehend the KIHON.

Kata  is the heart of karatedo and enables the practitioner to fully grasp the meaning of basics, breathing, concentration, balance, coordination and focus. A stylised set of movements that use a variety of blocks and strikes against an invisible opponent. A kata is used to perfect style, learn focus as well as demonstrating attack, defense and counter attacks.

組手  Kumite allows practitioners to apply methods of attack and defense in a dynamic manner that enhances timing, speed, and control while working with a partner under controlled conditions. Through hard training, practitioners seek to foster a spirit that strives for truth and respect for others.

Bushido - The Way of the Warrior is based on seven essential principles:

1. seigi : The right decision and rectitude
2. yuki : Bravery and heroism
3. jin: Compassion and benevolence to all
4. reigi : Courtesy and right action
5. makoto: Truthfulness and utter sincerity
6. meiyo: Honor and glory
7.chugi: Devotion and loyalty
